I do not think this prediction is accurate at all. I do not believe horoscopes but I do pay attention to them, if that makes sense. If I get positive information I’ll think “hm, maybe it’ll come true” but realistically, a prediction for everyone that was born in the same time range cannot possibly be true. I remember I would read the horoscopes in magazines and I’d read everyone’s and I felt like I could relate to almost all of them. Anyway, back to the question. I think there’s a 50/50 chance that a horoscope can possible be accurate. The book uses swans as an example to show a hypothesis is falsifiable. In THINK Judith A. Boss says “For example, the hypothesis that ‘all swans are white’ was based on observations of hundreds of thousands of swans, every one of which was white. However, the hypothesis was falsifiable, since it would take only one swan to prove it false.” (381) So comparing this to my horoscope prediction, I would have a desire to grow and improve in our interactions today. This is falsifiable because I did not have this desire, therefore my horoscope is incorrect.
I am the same way with horoscopes, I read them but I do not always believe what they are saying. I usually only want to believe they will come true if it is something good or something that will make my day better. Sometimes I even try to not make my horoscope happen if it is not something I like or want to happen to me. I think horoscopes are fun to read and see if they happen, but I do not think anybody should let them control how they live their life. And like you said, not everybody who was born in the same month will be or react to situations the same way.
ReplyDeleteJust like you I always seem to have my attention on horoscopes even though I do not believe them at all. This is because all of the people with the same horoscope sign can't have the same exact prediction as single me. Instead of you 50% prediction the horoscope is true, to me it's less than 50%.
ReplyDeleteI think what you have said about horoscopes is completely true. I would also read everyone else’s horoscope when I was younger and readying magazines like seventeen. The other horoscopes were also so general that they would always apply to me in some way as well. I really don’t believe in them either but I do find them interesting to read on occasion if I happen to see mine somewhere. Also I think that horoscopes are 100% falsifiable because there is always a person that will not be part of the majority and differ from the group in this situation.
