Sister Helen Prejean maintains that the death penalty is a violation of human dignity and is contrary to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, “who taught us to not return hate for hate and evil for evil.” Based on the quote alone, I believe that this scriptural passage prohibits the usage of the death penalty because the death penalty is basically returning evil for evil and taking an eye for an eye.
Taking away someone’s life is evil.
The death penalty is taking away someone’s life as punishment for serious crime.
Therefore, the death penalty is evil.
Like the quote said, Jesus of Nazareth taught us to not return hate for hate and evil for evil. I tried to put the definition of the death penalty, as well as the fact that that taking away someone’s life is evil (based on what Jesus of Nazareth taught) into the form of syllogisms to make my point a valid deductive argument.
I agree with you the death penalty is evil and definitely unnecessary there is no reason to kill one another. The bible states it is evil but yet some religions believe in it, which makes no sense if they are living by the word of Jesus. The death penalty I feel is more of a personal belief rather than a religious belief because everyone has their own thoughts on it. Killing people for their sins is unfair especially because no sins are greater than the next. Jesus viewed all sins as equal and you can be forgiven for them. The death penalty needs to be abolished.
ReplyDeleteI tend to disagree; I don’t think that the death penalty is entirely evil. Like in the situation of say someone beating and killing a dozen people, I believe that this person has to be insane and their quality of life is very low and on top of that they committed unforgivable crimes that they need to pay for them.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that the death penalty would be viewed in a religious sense as evil rather as a way to repent for sins. Although considering the fact that I know almost nothing about religions it is king of hard to try to say the comments I’ve made are at all accurate.
